We are reading and discussing The Barchester Towers by Anthony Trollope .
"I never saw anything like you clergymen … you are always thinking of fighting each other"
After the death of old Dr Grantly, a bitter struggle begins over who will succeed him as Bishop of Barchester. And when the decision is finally made to appoint the evangelical Dr Proudie, rather than the son of the old bishop, Archdeacon Grantly, resentment and suspicion threaten to cause deep divisions within the diocese. Trollope’s masterly depiction of the plotting and back-stabbing that ensues lies at the heart of one of the most vivid and comic of his Barsetshire novels, peopled by such very different figures as the saintly Warden of Hiram’s Hospital, Septimus Harding, the ineffectual but well-meaning new bishop and his terrifying wife, and the oily chaplain Mr Slope who has designs both on Mr Harding’s daughter and the fascinating would-be femme fatale Signora Vesey-Neroni.
This is the second volume of Trollope’s Chronicles of Barsetshire. In his introduction, Robin Gilmour examines the novel’s political and social background and Trollope’s concern with changes occurring in society. This edition also includes a preface by J. K. Galbraith.

Tenebrae
What: Tenebrae is a liturgical service of readings and Psalms that features distinctive symbolic elements of Christ’s passion and death.
Why Tenebrae?: Tenebrae means “shadows” or “darkness” in Latin. The service shows the darkness that comes over the earth upon Christ’s death.
Elements: Candles are gradually extinguished, and a loud noise, called a “strepitus” at the service’s conclusion symbolizes the chaos following Christ’s death.
Holy Week Connection: Tenebrae is designed to serve as a powerful, reflective experience for the faithful ahead of the Easter Triduum. The representation of the darkness of sin and death serve to call the faithful to embrace the light of Christ, who has conquered death.

CLIMATE + FAITH:
HOW WE CAN HELP MEET THE GREATEST CHALLENGE IN HUMAN HISTORY
2023 was Earth’s hottest year in recorded history. The time has come: God’s call to action – to protect and preserve a healthy climate for all – is ringing like a church bell.
Indeed, in virtually every transformative movement – from abolitionism to women’s suffrage to child labor protections – people of faith have been at the center of the action. To love the world, and put our love into practice. To care for creation, and pass it on to the next generation better than we found it.
This seven-week, 40-day devotional takes a “love-and-act” approach (rather than “doom-and-gloom”), building on our love for our neighbors, near and far, and our love for God, Maker of heaven and earth.
The Climate Care Team invites you to join us as we strive to make a difference.
